The after-school second shift is REAL 😩

Can we talk about the hours between getting home and bedtime?

Because WHY does 4:00–9:00 PM feel like an entire second workday? 😩

Everybody comes home tired.

The kids have been at school all day.

You’ve been working all day.

Somebody’s hungry.

Somebody has homework.

Somebody has practice.

Dinner still has to happen.

There are showers to take, bags to unpack, papers to sign, clothes to find for tomorrow…

And eventually we’re supposed to get everybody in bed at a reasonable hour.

Oh, and apparently we’re also supposed to have meaningful family conversations somewhere in there. 😂

It’s a LOT.

And when the evenings constantly feel chaotic, our first instinct is usually to fix the whole routine.

We’re making new schedules.

Creating chore charts.

Moving dinner.

Changing bedtime.

Announcing a brand-new family system that everybody is going to follow starting Monday. 😂

But before you overhaul the whole evening, I want you to try something different.

Find the bottleneck.

Ask yourself:

Where does our evening consistently start to fall apart?

Not everything that’s going wrong.

The one transition that seems to create problems for everything that comes after it.

Maybe getting started on homework takes 45 minutes because your child needs time to decompress first.

Maybe practice nights throw dinner completely off.

Maybe everybody does okay until it’s time to transition upstairs for showers and bedtime.

Or maybe the problem starts the minute everyone walks through the door because backpacks, shoes, lunchboxes and humans are all landing in different places. 😩

That one rough transition can create a domino effect.

Homework starts late.

Which pushes dinner later.

Which pushes showers later.

Which pushes bedtime later.

And suddenly it’s 9:37 PM, somebody still hasn’t brushed their teeth, and you’re wondering how you got here. 😂

So don’t fix everything.

This week, I want you to identify one bottleneck.

Watch your evening for a couple of days and pay attention to the transition that consistently requires the most reminders, negotiations, rushing or frustration.

Then ask:

What would make THIS part of our evening easier?

Maybe the answer is changing the timing.

Maybe something needs to be prepared earlier.

Maybe your child needs a clearer expectation.

Maybe everyone needs 20 minutes to decompress before the next thing begins.

Maybe the routine itself isn’t realistic for the amount of time and energy your family actually has.

You don’t have to redesign your entire evening to make your evenings better.

Sometimes you just need to fix the part that’s holding everything else up.

A parent stands in the kitchen with a “Seriously?” expression as her tween walks past a backpack, lunchbox, and shoes left on the floor, capturing the everyday frustration of a child knowing what needs to be done but not doing it.

How many times have you said some version of this? “But you KNOW what you're supposed to do!” Put your shoes away. Brush your teeth. Pack your backpack. Put your dirty clothes in the hamper. Charge your Chromebook. Take the water bottle out of your bag before it grows its own ecosystem. 😩😂 And the frustrating part is... They DO know. You've told them. You've shown them. You've practiced it. You've had the same routine for what feels like 742 days. So when they're standing there waiting for...

Thumb flipping a coin

I'm back! 👋🏾 I took a little break from your inbox because I was doing exactly what a lot of you were doing...trying to get these kids ready for another school year. 😂 And this year feels VERY different in my house. My youngest started middle school, and my oldest is moving closer and closer to officially becoming a teenager. Ugh. Where is the time going?!? But let me tell you... Middle school is WEIRD. One day they're talking your ear off. The next day: "How was school?" "Fine." "What did...

Has this thought been coming up lately… “Something has to change before the school year starts again”? Not in a dramatic way. But in small, quiet moments. A rough morning.A chaotic transition.A day that just feels harder than it should. And you catch yourself thinking: “We can’t do this again next year.” Because now you’ve seen it. The patterns. The pressure points. The things that keep making life harder. And July has a way of making that really clear. There’s enough distance from the school...
